art?
What kind of comment is that?
Is there a difference between the art that an Independent Curator would show and that of a Curator?
A very openly flippant one.
Without 'art' itself (ie the art-object or performance)what then is there for the Independent Curator or the Curator to curate?
I felt that it was missing from the list.
Also although this is for a different thread I was hoping to raise the issue that the main difference I can see between independent curating and that governed by an institution is that the act of independent curating and the finite managed event can itself be considered an 'art practice', and therefore is the 'ART'.
(slightly off topic sorry)
>Is there a difference between the art that an Independent Curator would show and that of a Curator?
There may well be the freedom of the Independent Curator to show what they specifically wish, outside of institutional pressure and/or constraint.
It may be a presumption but even outside of budgetary constraints could it be considered that the large institutions will put on spectacular retrospectives and that the Independent Curator would not?
(There being no point in them occupying the same niche and the Independent Curator feeling better served elsewhere?)
Not off topic. Flippant is good.
Yes. I think the independent curator is coming from a more practice based perspective. I noticed Margot Heller, the Director of the South London Gallery states in her bio as a selector fro Zoo Art Fair that she was an Independent Curator. Interesting.
